I am trying to build/grow a classroom library in hopes to build/grow our students love of reading. Throughout the year, my students come into class and read a book of their choice for 10-15 minutes each day. The more books I can have in my classroom, the more I hope students will find ones they enjoy. Our library is a great resource, but most of my students will not finish a novel in 2 weeks with only 10-15 minutes of reading time each day, and it's disappointing for the students if they have to return the books before finishing them. (They have to return a book after 2 weeks if someone else is on the wait-list for it.) Also, if a few students love a certain book and recommend it to others, I'd like to have additional copies of the more popular reads. This also allows students to read in pairs or small groups. As the year draws to an end, I will ask my students for recommendations on what titles to add to the classroom library, and then I will go buy those books with the Barnes & Noble gift card provided. The ultimate goal of a classroom library is to get kids reading more through student choice, and the biggest bonus of students reading more and connecting to novels they choose, is that they will become better readers and writers!
