miniPCR Thermal Cyclers Part 1 -...

#2223
Erfurdt, Nicole
With our focus on relevant real-world experiences for FHS Science students, additional lab equipment is required. miniPCR is a biotechnology company that produces cutting edge products to make DNA exploration easier and more affordable for educators and researchers. The thermal cyclers will be used by students in AP Biology, Pre-AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Forensic Science classes to amplify targeted DNA sequences for further analysis in a process known as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). This lab technique is used in professional labs to generate millions of copies of a DNA sample. The miniPCR thermal cyclers will also work with a free App for Chrome, Android, or iOS so that our students can visualize the PCR process as it is occurring in the thermal cycler. After amplification, DNA will be analyzed further using the real-world techniques of restriction enzyme digestion and gel electrophoresis.

Human Body Systems Skull Models ...

With these highly accurate human skull models, Human Body Systems students will be able to study the anatomy of the human skull. Although diagrams are useful, 3-D models give students another way to visualize the structures they are required to learn. The bones of the skull are numbered and a comprehensive key is provided for student reference.

With these durable, economical vertebra models, students will be able to closely study the structures of the 5 characteristic vertebrae - the atlas, the axis, a typical cervical vertebra, a thoracic vertebra, and a lumbar vertebra. Although diagrams are useful, 3-D models give students another way to visualize the structures they are required to learn.

Dudley Design Classroom - FHS Sc...

Dudley, Stephanie
The FHS vision is to design a classroom environment that will inspire 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. The Design Lab classroom format would include movable tables and chairs that could group students flexibly depending on the activity. Grouping in this manner, in combination with the technology that we already have, could provide multiple learning benefits: Creating a collaborative and problem solving environment in the classroom which is an essential 21st century skill. Increasing student engagement by involving students in discussion and interactivity. Increasing achievement levels by taking student individual learning styles into consideration. Teachers are better able to spend more time guiding, facilitating, and challenging students to learn at a higher level of rigor and application. Several years ago, the High School began the process of converting classrooms of interested teachers in to Design Labs. The FHS teachers involved report increased student engagement, increased insight to students and their abilities, and increased collaboration amongst peers. Our vision is to continue to increase the number of design labs to give students an active learning environment conducive to learning in the 21st century.
